March 20, 2006

It’s another busy week in Aspen and Snowmass. Spring break really brings in the kids during this time. The snow conditions couldn’t be better. Snowmass is showing an 89-inch base and Aspen Highlands has a 99-inch base. Only 4 weeks let in the season too! There are great lodging deals so call now! http://www.mountainchalet.com

The weekend was snowy and colder but the skiers and boarders were very happy. I didn’t get a chance to get out on the slope personally. Maybe I can take a few turns over my lunch hour though.

On Friday, there is a Bud Light Big Air competition again followed by live music on the Mall and fireworks.

Markley Hut Trip

Snowmass and Aspen have great snow conditions. The last snowstorm brought us mounds of new snow. The skiers and boarders are coming in with big smiles on their faces.

My hut trip was this past weekend. The morning we left the avalanche danger increased from low to moderate, giving me an ache in my stomach. After research and talking to the experts, we decided it was safe to go. There were seven ladies from my Book Club to go on this overnight trip. We all strapped avalanche beepers to our bodies and packed shovels, probes, sleeping bags, food and other essentials in our packs. So at about 1PM on Saturday we started our 2.6 mile trek to the Markley Hut. We passed by 3 avalanche shoots, taking turns going through them. To be honest they did not look like much snow was on them. It was windy though and going up hill with packs against the wind, I was breathing rather hard the entire trip, especially trying to go quickly through the shoots.

We arrived at the Hut shortly after 3pm. We got the fire going in the wood stove and the hut warmed up quickly. Buckets of snow were filled and put in a larger pot on the wood stove for cooking, cleaning and drinking. We had hors'de vours and a lovely shrimp and pasta dinner. Since only one person finished our book, we found many other things to talk about.

We all rose early the next morning and headed down just before lunch. It’s a fun run down the hill and the fresh snow made it even more enjoyable. If you are interested in a hut trip, go to: http://www.huts.org

I highly recommend it!

Oscar Night

Snow is on the way! At least that is what the weather forecasters are telling us. I went skiing yesterday and the conditions were fine! While it did get a little slushy at the very bottom of the mountain, the top and midway were beautiful! The ski season is NOT over yet, so call us and book your reservation now!
For more information go to: http://www.aspensnowmass.com

Light night one of our ski club’s held a dinner for the Oscar’s. We put in two televisions in the Breakfast Room and Scott prepared a delicious Mexican Fest for them. While I helped Scott out at the hotel, my daughters had their own Oscar Party. We had filled out ballots earlier that day and they stayed up till the end to follow them. They liked Chicken Little’s performance the best! I didn’t get to see much of the show this year, but for the group’s response, it was an enjoyable evening. The only real negative response was to the best song – some type of rap music. This morning my older daughter told me she did not like the song either. However, my younger daughter thought it was fun! For the winners, go to: http://www.oscar.com

A beautiful March 2nd Day!

It’s a beautiful day in the Rocky Mountains of Aspen and Snowmass. Sunny, warm and ski conditions are wonderful. Yesterday brought 2 new inches of snow. It’s time to get out on the ski slopes! In the old days, any lodge could simply put up a sign that read, “Gone Skiing” and no one seemed to mind. Now, that would cause a lawsuit. How did this culture get so rigid and lose the fun in the day-to-day activities?

When the Snowmass Mountain Chalet open in 1967, all the rooms were rented out, but construction was not complete. The men stayed in the rooms without the doors or unfinished bathrooms. The single women received the rooms with the doors and finished bathrooms. No one seemed to mind the condition of the hotel. They were here to ski, not sit in their rooms. Skiing is now a simpler sport because of the excellent ski and snowboard equipment, chairlifts and grooming equipment. Yet, people do not ski as hard or as long. They are not in shape like they used to be, more demanding and certainly whine a lot more!

I encourage progress and I thrive on change. Sometimes, I just wish certain things would stay the same.

Snow mixed with rain?

Snow mixed with rain?

Yes, it’s a little warmer than we would like right now. The forecast predicted snow mixed with rain but so far, we have only had the white fluffy stuff. The skiers and boarders coming off the hill have big happy smiles on the faces. No one is complaining!

I can’t believe it’s March 1st! A few schools are having spring break this week so we are seeing an increase of people around the Village. Mardi Gras brought in a large crowd from the south. These people always have a good time, where they go.
